Other Stuff - Option 10

We have sought to set out in simple language those things which need to be done which can avert climate catastrophe, ensure energy security and yet save the nation from all the dangers associated with nuclear power. Inevitably, we have missed out some other steps and initiatives which, accumulated together can make a significant difference.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

By being more careful in the way we consume goods and services we can make a significant difference to the amount of pollution and Carbon Dioxide emitted. We must simply reduce what we buy, seeking only that which we need. Make sure that you only buy the food that you need, avoiding any waste - and save yourself money. Reuse goods if you can, buying second hand is often a lot more fun. And, of course, recycle! It takes an awful lot more energy to manufacture something from new than to recycle the minerals and fibres that are often thrown into landfill. But we need Government assistance to make recycling easier for everyone - make it easy for people and far more people will take part. We need weekly doorstep collection of:-

We also need government regulations to reduce excess packaging (just look at those over packaged Easter eggs coming into the shops).

Government should also vigorously support home composting and provide more local composting facilities.

Food miles

As individuals we can help to reduce the miles food, and other goods, take from producer to our home, by buying locally produced goods and food - for example at farmers markets. Individuals can do a lot, but we also need Government action to make a difference across the whole country. Government must act to deter excessive distances goods travel - both on the roads and by air by ensuring that transport costs reflect the environmental damage that is caused.

Sustainable agriculture

A range of reforms are needed to stop the waste of the Common Agricultural Policy and encourage the organic production of food. As individuals we should also consider eating less meat. For more information on these issues visit The Green Party and The Soil Association.

Water conservation

As global warming accelerates, it is inevitable that we will experience more climate extremes - both more heavy rain and periods of drought. It is therefore essential that we conserve water and collect rain water. Government should reform Building Regulations to require new build homes and businesses to collect a high proportion of the rainfall received for use in toilets and non-drinking water applications.
