The Proposals - Option 10

If you agree with the following 10 steps to energy security, please sign the petition.

  1. No new nuclear installations.

We reject nuclear power for all the well-known reasons, opting instead for low-carbon technologies which will lead us to a carbon-neutral economy by the year 2050.

  2. Energy efficiency - we simply stop wasting energy.

We demand energy efficiency regulations to require industry, commerce, retailers and the public to act to conserve energy. We can save 30% on the nation's total energy consumption by, for example: properly insulating homes and businesses, using energy efficient light bulbs and ensuring virtually all new petrol cars deliver at least 60 mpg. We do all the things we do now, but in the most energy efficient way.

  3. All homes to become micro-generating plants.

We need to introduce building regulations to require new buildings to be fitted with solar water heaters, ground source heat pumps, micro wind generators and photovoltaic cells (PV). Where fossil fuel central heating is unavoidable, it must be Combined Heat and Power.

We demand a reforming Stamp Duty, Government Grants and other regulations, to create strong financial incentives to ensure micro-generating features are fitted to the bulk of the existing housing stock.

  4. Carbon sequestration - stop pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.

We demand that all new gas, oil and coal power stations built must have full carbon sequestration technology - capturing the carbon to be pumped into North Sea oil fields. So while the nation develops the safe, clean renewable technologies we need, we can continue to burn fossil fuels in a responsible way.

  5. Tidal barriers to protect our cities - and generate power.

Thanks to the irresponsible behaviour of the worst polluters, here and abroad, we know the world is condemned to a rapid rise in sea levels. We must protect our coastal cities, including London, against sea level rise, so we must construct some tidal barriers - to protect from flooding and generate electricity.

  6. Wind Power - we love it.

We recognise that wind turbines are the cheapest and most convenient of all the renewables. We must build them in their thousands - off-shore and on-shore, on our industrial estates, beside our motorways and wherever people need them. We will learn to love them for their beauty, and the clean, safe power they provide.

  7. Serious investment in zero emission technologies.

The UK alone cannot solve the global problem of climate change, so we demand a radical investment programme to make the UK the world leader in the renewables. New technology will be shared with developing countries so that the whole world can benefit.

We must stop starving the zero emission technologies of the funds needed to get them going. We need serious investment in new technologies like wave and tidal, including energy storage systems like hydrogen fuel cells. We must invest in ITER (the international experimental nuclear fusion reactor) but not lose sight of the fact that it may never work cost effectively. So, we must develop the range of renewables which can provide us with the power we need.

  8. Cleaner cars and less traffic.

Stop manufacturing fossil fuel cars by 2020, moving to fuel cell, electric battery and compressed air technology. We will come to derive the power for these from the renewable technologies. We will copy the Dutch, introducing a cheap, reliable integrated public transport system. We must stop new major road building schemes and accept financial charges to deter excessive car use. We must introduce lower speed limits in towns, to get far more of us out of our cars walking and cycling and we accept a lower national maximum speed limit - to save fuel and encourage greater train use. We must also get as much freight as possible onto the railways.

  9. Aviation - stop the planned expansion.

We cannot avert climate catastrophe if this industry continues to expand. So we must call a halt to the growth in short flights and weekend breaks. We demand an end to all airport expansion, we call for a new aviation tax to cut demand and the subsidy of rail fares to reduce internal flights. By reducing short haul flights we can stop the demand for more runways and bring to an end the problem of "stacking", in which aircraft circle over busy airports while awaiting landing permission.

  10. Do all the other stuff too.

We must reduce the energy wasted across the full range of other activities. We must reduce the rubbish we produce, recycle everything we can and compost organic waste. We must cut the "food miles" of produce and adopt sustainable agricultural practices. We must conserve water, collect rain water and make all the other small changes that will make a big difference.
